Manuel Felguérez

Born on December 12, 1928, in the town of Valparaíso, Zacatecas, Felguérez traveled between Mexico and Europe over the course of his life where he studied art in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière under the famous Russian sculptor Ossip Zadkine and later at the Académie Colarossi. According to writer Octavio Paz, “Manuel Felguérez created a new muralism movement where painting is joined with sculpture.”

The four paintings and eight sculptures featured throughout The Sebastian are part of a collection that Felguérez created in celebration of his 80th birthday and were first exhibited at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. Manuel Felguérez passed away in June 2020.
